Early August Weekend Recap

Thanks to the lackluster reviews of The Dark Tower, Wind River‘s extremely limited release, not to mention other obligations perfectly timed to make my favorite movie time (discount morning tickets for the win!), I ended up spending the entire weekend out of movie theaters. Here’s the entertainment that filled my free time instead:

Gifted is a charming, heartwarming movie that isn’t great and doesn’t try to be. It’s a straightforward, predictable story that treads a familiar path that takes it through all the expected story beats.

And that’s a good thing. There’s something to be said for feel-good movies that don’t challenge you so much as allow you to enter and enjoy their world. Gifted is that kind of movie, which I consider a very, very good thing. I thoroughly enjoyed my time with it, and I fully expect to watch it again someday.

I love this game. I’ve been slowly making my way through the campaign—slowly to the point that I just now got to the twist everybody’s been talking about. I know there’s a lot left to go, and I can’t wait to experience it. The Rites are a blast, even as I’m still getting the hang of the expanding cast of characters, but the story and the sections between the Rites are equally entertaining.

I can’t recommend this game enough, whether you’re looking for a good story-driven game or a sports-adjacent game.

This show is still immensely watchable despite tons of jokes that barely get a groan out of me now, let alone a laugh. So much of the show hasn’t aged well—and wasn’t great to begin with—but there’s still enough here to keep me coming back for more absent-minded binge sessions.

Highlight: Pyre, no contest. This game is special and every time I have to stop immediately has me looking forward to the next time I get to start. I think it’s safe to say it’ll be a highlight of any weekend I have time to play it.

On the way: My current rentals awaiting viewing: Life and Raw. Tomorrow’s free rentals thanks to T-Mobile Tuesdays: Colossal and either The Lost City of Z or The Circle. More Pyre probably covers everything I’ll be able to do with gaming, but I’m hoping to get through a lot more of that this week than I have over the past few.

What did you see/watch/play/do this weekend? Let me know in the comments.
